The Legends Men's Golf team was invited to compete in the Minnesota Golf Classic at Pioneer Creek Pioneer Creek Golf Course in Maple Plain, Minn., September 9.
Alexandria College was the only 2-year college invited to the event. The tournament was hosted by the University of Minnesota and Bethel University and governed by the Minnesota Golf Association. The majority of the teams competing in the event were from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). The rest hailed from NCAA DII and DII schools throughout the region, plus individuals from Division I schools like Kansas, Utah, and Notre Dame also competed.
The Legends were able to walk away with a 7th place finish. They even broke their record team score of 299, set the day prior at the Spartan Invitational, with a team score of 297.
"The seventh-place finish is very respectable and shows the hard work our team has been putting in considering last year at that same tournament we finished in 15th place," said Scott Dirck, Legends Golf coach.
The Legends also played the lowest team score for 54 holes in school history. Gannon Walsh now holds the Legends' lowest individual 54-hole total with a 215, and he was third place amongst fellow NJCAA competitors.
"It was fun to compete against players from DI schools," said Walsh, Legends Golfer. "The course was in good shape and it was playing tough. We played solid as a team and I'm excited to see how far we can go."
The final scores were:
T20 Gannon Walsh (Belgrade) 73-70-72 total: 215
T56 Hank Sogge (Eagan) 72-78-75 total: 225
T74 Nixon Harrier (New London) 76-75-79 total: 230
T93 Luke Ashbrook (Clearwater) 79-78-78 total: 235
T106 Collin Swedzinski (Dawson) 76-88-80 total: 244
The Legends Men's Golf team will hit the road to compete in the North Central District Fall Preview at Gates Park Golf Course in Waterloo, Iowa, on September 13.
