LIVE YOUR PASSION: The latest buzz in bass fishing is the story of Easton Fothergill, a 22-year-old Minnesotan who took his college fishing career to the next level by smashing records and earning the 2025 Bassmaster Classic championship title. In the college circuit, top ranked anglers advance to pro competitions and can continue to compete alongside professionals all the way up to tournaments like the Bassmaster Classic.
The Alexandria Technical & Community College (MN) Legends anglers have competed against Fothergill and his teammates from the University of Montevallo (AL), often ranking near the top of the pack with the now-champion. At the Abu Garcia College Fishing Harris Chain of Lakes tournament in January 2023, Legends anglers ranked 38th and 74th, and at the Table Rock Lake tournament in April 2024, the Legends ranked 35th; both times placing ahead of many talented Montevallo teams.
Fothergill's story is proof that attending a college where you can live your passion is worth the investment. Alexandria Technical & Community College was the first Minnesota 2-year college to offer Competitive Fishing as a nationally-competitive varsity sport, allowing students to do what they love while they get a great education, rather than putting their dreams on hold until after graduation.
Most of the schools competing in the college circuit are 4-year universities that come with hefty price tags. When it comes to value, there's no contest. ATCC's tuition rate is 80% lower than Montevallo's out of state rate, saving you almost $26,000 over two years. Plus, ATCC doesn't have an out of state tuition rate, so even if you aren't from Minnesota it's still a great value.
- ATCC: $183/credit
- Montevallo: $866/credit (out of state)
